Deputy Carry Pine Hospitalized after Howland Township Car Accident at Route 46 and Mines Road

Howland Township, Ohio (April 8, 2020) – A sheriff’s department K9 was injured Monday night in an alleged DUI car accident at an intersection in Howland Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at the intersection of Route 46 and Mines Road on Monday, April 6.

The state patrol said Gregory Miller, 59, of Niles, was driving his pickup truck on Route 46 when he allegedly ran a red light at Mines Road and struck a sheriff’s SUV cruiser from Orange County, Vermont.

Deputy Carry Pine, 39, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital. Pine’s drug-sniffing K-9 Diesel had serious injuries and was transported to a 24-hour emergency animal clinic.

According to the reports., the dog has been discharged from the clinic while Deputy Pine remained hospitalized.

Investigators determined that Miller was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision. He was arrested for aggravated vehicular assault with alcohol involved, a local news source reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
