Charles Kistner ID’d as Bicyclist Killed in Hilton Head Island Truck Accident at Gum Tree Road and Katie Miller Drive
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (April 9, 2020) – The Beaufort County Coroner’s office has identified the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a truck Saturday, April 4 at an intersection in Hilton Head Island as Charles Kistner, 71, of Buffalo, New York.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Kistner was riding his bicycle through the intersection of Gum Tree Road and Katie Miller Drive when he fell off his bike in a crosswalk of Katie Miller.
Kistner was then struck by a 2017 Ford F-250 pick-up truck that ran a red light. The truck was towing a piece of machinery, police said.
Kistner was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the authorities said.
The truck driver was cited for disregarding a stop sign and having no driver’s license.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
